How to re-register a second hand BlueSpray?
« on: December 06, 2015, 01:52:41 am »
I have an 'old style' BlueSpray that is new to me.  I would like to register this device so I can access it through bluespray.net, but it would appear the previous owner had already registered it (no visible Register button).  What do I do/who do I talk to?  Thanks!

You should email our support group support at bluespray dot net.

Bert,

We've replied to your support email but your mail server from wavecable.com rejected our email.  Please ask your ISP to resolve this problem.

Support - How very strange.  I received about 20 email messages at bertlj@wavecable.com on the 6th and continue to receive many mail messages per day.  Not sure what happened.  Could I ask you to try one more time please?

I received your email and I have followed your directions for re-registering this device.  You should now be in receipt of the information you asked for to transfer ownership.  Thank you.

I have to tell you, BlueSpray's procedure for re-registering a second (third...)-hand device needs review.  Your current process sets the bar rather high for the new owner.  Considering registration has serious impact on device features, it certainly seems to me that a process can (no, must) be devised that does not involve a previous owner.

Bert,

The system is designed to prevent someone from hi-jacking or stealing it.  If the previous owner consents, I don't see why he/she is not willing to just send us an email.

New question for this same thread.  Now that you have allowed me to re-register this second-hand BlueSpray, how can it possibly know what NOAA Weather info to use for my location?

To the issue of previous owner consent, in this age of eBay and Amazon (used), how can we really know the real previous owner?  I would think you should start seeing a lot of that about now.

We've updated our record with the info you provided.
We don't have a lot of customers re-selling their controllers actually.
In this day and age of security, we think this is the best way to prevent unauthorized access and acquisition of the device.

Is there any way to see the NOAA information getting to my BlueSpray?

If you have 2.0, the weather information can be viewed by clicking on the cloud icon.

Help me out here.  Where would I look for this cloud icon?

If you enable the weather feature, the controller will pull the weather data from NOAA 1 hr prior to a scheduled run.  So if there is no scheduled run on a particular day, it won't pull it.  When it does, you will see a cloud icon on the Today's run column.

Thank you for that!

I have sent a recent email to Support in a effort to correct issues with personal BlueSpray re-registration process.

I would also like to again plead my case for a new evaluation of your internal policy related to re-registering a second-hand unit.  As a retired senior computer specialist, I feel your current procedure requiring the new owner contact the previous owner and ask them to send you an email stating that he/she wishes to transfer his/her account to the new owner really misses the mark.  You have stated that BlueSpray's reasoning for this policy is "The system is designed to prevent someone from hi-jacking or stealing it".  Your controller provides for basic security in the form of username/password.  Using that tool should be the responsibility of the end user, not BlueSpray Support.  That leaves 'stealing it'.  I'm going to stop here and pretend that I believe BlueSpray did not write their policy anticipating a high incidence of BlueSpray controllers being stolen from garages.  Has that been a real problem?  In fact, have there been a lot of cases of username/password protected units being hi-jacked?

Fortunately, we have not experienced any theft case (that we're aware of).
The controller's password can be reset if someone physically accesses it by doing a reset.
