Can't cancel or pause

Just learning my way around the system but I have a hard time canceling or pausing a program once it has started.  I have clicked on the icon to stop  or end  it but nothing happens.  What I do is go to each  zone and deactivate it.  Is there a better way?

You can just click on the active zone and set run time to 0.
